I love these. Wish I had gotten anywhere near that out of mine.

I just got rid of my mkvi. Feel exactly the same.

Just start at the bottom.

TL DR: random loss of oil pressure, engine kablooie, engine replaced, multiple throttle body failures

Mine was so catastrophic, but gradual. Throttle bottle, pcv valve twice. Carbon buildup. Got it to 70k but was turning into a money pit. One of those “I gotta spend how much? Didn’t I just do that last year? Damn"

Correct number of doors and correct wheels! I feel like my 2.5L Golf at 133k km (82k miles) feels better when driven, and driven enthusiastically. I hope to be into another fast VW soon but if it lasts as long as yours, I won’t complain!

Dang! My Wife has an ‘08 GTI and damn if it doesn’t look fantastic after a detail. Such a good look the Mk5 had. I have a Mk6 R and I just don’t get the same “that’s gonna look great in 8-9yrs” feel as I do when I look at her car.

Hers has about 99,500miles on it, 2nd DSG transmission and electrical gremlins (sunroof opens randomly, radio turns off randomly). But it's paid off sooooooo.

Haha. Knock on wood I haven’t had many real issues with it. A couple odd things here and there but with some basic maintenance and keeping an eye on the cam follower every few thousand miles I have very few complaints.

I highly recommend Mother’s Back to Black. Works wonders on the plastic trim and is really easy to use.

I’ve always preferred the looks of the MK6, especially from behind. It’s less “cutesy,” but I do agree that the MK5's design has really stood the test of time. I certainly don’t think it looks 10 years old.

How has your experience been with the R?

I’ll look into that for next time. I have a buddy who does it on the side so I just buy him beer.

The Mk6 R has been decent so far. I bought it used (I’m the 2nd owner) at 16k and now it’s at 35k (my daily). I came from a ‘12 WRX hatch so it’s a world of difference. It could use more power and I might finally get a downpipe and tune but ugh money. I kind of wish it stuck out more, no boy-racer stick out but just “No, it’s not a base model Golf”...

I drive my Wife’s GTI sometimes and omg it drives me nuts. The DSG is infuriating to me as a manual driver. Give it a touch of gas and it drops 2 gears and hauls ass. Give it a ton of gas to get across traffic and it just redlines and goes no where. Stick for life! (Theft deterrent)

My dad has an Audi A3 with DSG and my GTI is a proper manual, so I’ve spent a bit of time in both and while the DSG may be more efficient on paper, nothing compares to changing gears yourself.

I’ve only had my GTI for a few months, I’m the second owner. The first owner lived in Michigan, did business in Chicago, and spent most of his time behind the wheel on the highway. While I got it with 160k on it, the interior is clean as can be and barring the stonechips you would expect with that many highway miles, the exterior isn’t bad either

My least favorite part about it is the color.
